Thanks Mark Griffith who notes that a B2 protocol error is "nearly always due to some file in your incoming message queue on the Winlink server that is formatted incorrectly".
To resolve this, go to
https://webmail.winlink.org:446/
and login using the normal Winlink web mail interface, then clean out the (incorrectly formatted) messages.
Apparently SquirrelMail raises a fatal error on some document formatting errors that WinLink's web interface doesn't seize up on.
